New Wireless SoC Enables Eco-Friendly Zigbee Green Power IoT Devices

Beijing, China – February 20, 2020 – Silicon Labs (also known as “Silicon Technology”, NASDAQ: SLAB) announced a new line of secure, ultra-low power Zigbee system-on-chip (SoC) products. These SoCs are designed for eco-friendly IoT products in mesh networks. The EFR32MG22 (MG22) family of products is the smallest, lowest power SoC optimized for Zigbee Green Power (green energy) applications, expanding Silicon Labs’ Zigbee portfolio. Based on Silicon Labs’ Wireless Gecko Series 2 platform, the MG22 SoC is ideal for Zigbee devices powered by coin cells or via energy harvesting, targeting applications including smart home sensors, lighting control, and building and industrial automation.

Energy-efficient Zigbee Green Power technology helps address environmental concerns by progressively reducing residential, commercial and industrial energy consumption. Zigbee Green Power uses the same 802.15.4 PHY and MAC as the energy-efficient Zigbee 3.0 protocol, further reducing energy consumption by reducing the amount of data transmitted wirelessly. From the outset, Zigbee Green Power has been designed as an efficient protocol to support IoT devices, whether it is battery powered or powered by “batteryless” energy harvesting. Silicon Labs has specifically optimized the design of the new MG22 SoC to bring leading connectivity solutions to these challenging, power-sensitive wireless applications.

“As a leading Zigbee supplier, Silicon Labs is uniquely positioned to lead the evolution of Zigbee Green Power mesh networking solutions,” said Matt Johnson, senior vice president and general manager of IoT products at Silicon Labs. “Our new MG22 SoC solution combines Industry-leading energy efficiency, security features, wireless performance, software tools and protocol stacks can effectively meet the growing market demand for environmentally friendly, ultra-low power IoT products.”

The MG22 SoC integrates a high-performance, low-power 76.8 MHz Arm Cortex-M33 core with TrustZone. The SoC provides excellent energy efficiency with ultra-low transmit and receive power (8.2 mA TX, 3.9 mA RX at +6 dBm), 1.4 µA deep sleep mode power consumption, and low-power peripherals.

Silicon Labs offers an industry-leading combination of security features in Series 2 products, including the new MG22 SoC.

Price and Availability

Scheduled to begin shipping in March 2020, the EFR32MG22 SoC supports 5 mm x 5 mm QFN40, 4 mm x 4 mm QFN32 and ultra-thin 0.3 mm x 4 mm x 4 mm TQFN32 packages. The EFR32MG22 SoC starter development board kit is also scheduled to be available in March, with retail prices starting at $99. Developers can download the integrated development environment Simplicity Studio for free, which includes network analyzer and energy analyzer tools, Zigbee 3.0 protocol stack, demo examples and mobile applications.
